This is the second half of a two-part interview with Zach Cowie, the Emmy-nominated music supervisor, former record label man and band manager, DJ, slow-music entrepreneur and audiophile with bonafides. I traveled to Los Angeles in June for work and was able to connect with Cowie in person to not only meet in a shady hotel room to record a podcast with him and Brian Hunter (included below), but also to spend an afternoon at his loft in downtown LA and check out his Shindo-based hi-fi rig.

I’m into science fiction in a big way, so that means that by default I’m a Trekkie – a Star Trek fan for those sci-fi challenged out there – which means that when I first saw Naim’s Mu-so Qb design a few years ago I instantly associated it with the Borg Collective’s ships from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

When I meet someone new and conversation inevitably turns to what it is both of us pursue for a living, people look at me in one of two ways when I tell them what I do: They either nod and give me a polite smile, having no real interest or their gaze intensifies, they lean in and they give me a knowing look because they love music too.

Options. They’re essential in life, so why wouldn’t they be in high fidelity?

In a world that requires a level of computational understanding for everyday communication that just a generation ago was rare, those who have chosen the convenience and sonic quality that digital audio for music playback offers can find themselves at odds with not only making it convenient, but even understanding exactly how it does what it’s doing.

It was small and light. Too small and light I thought myself. I wondered – ”Did they forget to pack the amplifier?” But, I opened the diminutive cardboard shipping box and there it was: The SVS Prime Wireless Soundbase.

The MS500 is not designed to do everything under the audiophile sun, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cast a shadow over others with its performance capabilities.

Five DACs Every Audiophile Should Hear… Hyperbole? Perhaps to some, but I’m being serious because every digital-centric music lover has been there at one time or another. Doing our best to not look too interested in a DAC or some file-based accoutrement at a show or hi-fi shop. Usually failing.

System synergy. It’s one of the most critical factors in building a high-fidelity kit. I say kit because it is very much like constructing a model – the wrong pieces together (or something missing) and it won’t ever be finished.
