Let’s be real, having to choose a product that qualifies itself as one that breaks through the noise of everything that 2018 saw in new products for audiophiles for all the myriad reasons that allows a product to set itself apart from all others is no easy job to take on.

Running up that hill to discuss the more upper-echelon of hi-fi products, one finds the air more rarified, much like mountain climbing, the higher one goes the better the views become but usually with a cost. In climbing it's danger to life and limb, in hi-fi it's danger to the pocketbook and also one of hearing what you might have been missing.

For those with more jingle than jangle in their pockets, this Editor's Choice list focuses on those components which I felt made a real impact on my listening experiences this year, but were priced in the $500 to $2,500 USD bracket.

Imaging. That’s the first thing I noticed after I spent all of five minutes getting the new KEF LSX Wireless Music System up and running, that and prodigious, clean bass that seemed improbable from an $1,100 USD pint-sized loudspeaker not even mounted on stands.

Thanks to a lot of hard work from contributor Grover Neville, AudioStream brings you the first of three in a series of the 2018 AudioStream Editor's Choice Lists. This little list is sure to please some of you and sure to disappoint more than a few. But we just can’t fit everything we’d like to. Regardless, here it is.

Roon. If you’re into streaming music or computer audio then most likely you’ve heard of this music-playback software and might be wondering what it is exactly and why you should think about using it instead of just running Tidal, Qobuz or Spotify natively via a web-browser interface.

If you follow any of my musical musings on this site you’ll know I have what some would refer to as mildly eclectic taste.

Faith. There seems to be a sense of spiritual angst among the audiophile faithful who stream their digital audio via cloud-based music services and its cause seems to be the continuing delay of the French high-resolution music service Qobuz from entering the North American market.

The crushing basslines and powerful vocal overdubs torturing eight-inch transducers stopped so suddenly that there wasn’t even an echo of a note left hanging in the air between my speakers. I hit play on the app interface residing on my iPad from the comfort of my sofa and it was back. The song pounding into the room as I controlled the ones and zeros and sat, scrolling through the thousands of album and song titles available to me from the touch screen cradled in my palm. Such is the experience of music playback in this modern computer-audio era.

You look at the calendar on your iPhone and realize it’s December and a flush of panic turns your face red, which in turn is mistaken for rosy cheeks by your partner who squeals and exclaims “You’ve got the Holiday Spirit!” Unaware it’s fear that grips your heart in an icy embrace of commercialism, crowds, snow shovelling, Christmas trees, lights, ornaments and of course gifts.
