Bands with “Crystal” in their name. That’s the LP section at Redcat Records where I stumbled across the self-titled album Crystal Castles, around which these musings are based.

I thought LPs were getting pricey. I mean, I was kinda counting on my album collection going up in value over the next several years, but not my CD collection. Who could have guessed in 2003 that box set of six CDs by the British experimental electronic duo Coil would be going for more than $3k – $3,226 USD to be exact – in 2019 on the audio recordings database/marketplace website Discogs.

This is the second half of a two-part interview with Zach Cowie, the Emmy-nominated music supervisor, former record label man and band manager, DJ, slow-music entrepreneur and audiophile with bonafides. Five DACs Every Audiophile Should Hear… Hyperbole? Perhaps to some, but I’m being serious because every digital-centric music lover has been there at one time or another. Doing our best to not look too interested in a DAC or some file-based accoutrement at a show or hi-fi shop. Usually failing.

It was about 10 years ago. We were setting up the Shure M44-7 cartridge I had sourced from a used hi-fi shop on the Technics 1200 MKV I had scrimped and saved months for. My friend Bobby C becme serious, “pretty soon you won’t be hearing the music at all, you’ll be critically listening.”

Who is still buying CDs anymore? Everybody knows that you either drop the needle into a vinyl groove or stream albums online via your laptop or smartphone.

The goal of the system is to successfully allow me to interface — with you, the reader — through my writings what it is I am not only hearing, but physically experiencing.
