Struggle. We all have at least a couple in one form or another as we live our lives, be they verb or noun. My father taught me that while struggle in life was inevitable, it was about how we dealt with it that mattered the most. Regardless, there is struggle and it is real for many for us… and at many different budget levels. What struggle am I referring to you ask? The struggle for an end-game preamplifier of course.

NAD has seen the writing on the wall for music and connectivity-first oriented consumers who want high-fidelity in their homes with ease of use, as few cables as possible, one box and a price point that is going to offer high quality with technological longevity… oh, and great industrial design chops so it fits in seamlessly with today’s modern decor in urban dwellings.

Let’s be real, having to choose a product that qualifies itself as one that breaks through the noise of everything that 2018 saw in new products for audiophiles for all the myriad reasons that allows a product to set itself apart from all others is no easy job to take on.

Rather than produce a definitive list, my presentation of the best music of the year is more cohesive than it is comprehensive. This selection of indie, hip hop, experimental and dance music provides a general sense of what I consider to be the most notable highlights from an arguably unremarkable but nonetheless enjoyable year in music.

Running up that hill to discuss the more upper-echelon of hi-fi products, one finds the air more rarified, much like mountain climbing, the higher one goes the better the views become but usually with a cost. In climbing it's danger to life and limb, in hi-fi it's danger to the pocketbook and also one of hearing what you might have been missing.
