Welcome to the seventh episode of the AudioStream Podcast and host Brian Hunter brings you industry icon Peter Madnick. Madnick’s history with digital audio reaches back to some of the earliest incarnations of the external DAC. Noise. Sometimes it’s hard to hear what’s really going on because there’s so much of it in our lives these days obscuring what we’re really trying to listen to. I mean, do you have any idea how much electronic hash is being generated by your laptop or PC as it navigates millions of computational cycles in processing overhead while you are listening to music?

I’d previously written in August of last year about the announcement from data Conversion Systems (dCS) that the company’s venerable entry-level Debussy DAC was being replaced after seven years of winning awards from the hi-fi press by the Bartók Network Streaming DAC. Think about that: A seven year product life-cycle in computer audio.

Android bassheads got their fix a couple months ago.

I simply cannot. I know… and I’m sorry, but it’s quite impossible at the moment. I’ve received telephone calls and emails about it before even being able to publish this post – people want to know and I feel bad that I can’t say more. UPDATE – New specs received

In my experience choosing cabling to loom up your hi-fi has been a protracted exercise in A/B listening tests and like eating too much pasta, can leave you feeling a bit sleepy and in need of a nice espresso. That said, in the digital-playback world of the audiophile – or music lover as I prefer to call those with a bent for high fidelity – cables can make a noticeable difference to system performance in my experience.

PS Audio’s Stellar Line of gear is no stranger around here, with the M700 mono blocs and Gain Cell DAC having spent a few months in the bungalow with me last summer and earning great praise for their price/performance ratio and also an AudioStream Editor’s Choice Award 2018 for the Gain Cell DAC.

Streamlining your box count to get something that can do most or all of what the bulk of those separates do is fast becoming the holy grail of digital audio for many.
