I Saved Latin! A Tribute to Wes Anderson – Various Artists

Bright, shiny things.

I swear I’m a magpie at times, always taken with something that flashes seductively and catches my eye.

Wes Anderson films are like that, there’s an aesthetic to their visuals, their colour palettes, their cinematography and lastly (of many points I could touch on, but due to time considerations I will not) there are their soundtracks.

The music chosen by Anderson to help populate his films is like a rich, delicious ramen in a cozy noodle shop full of smiling staff, lustrous woods and the coziest of curiously-patterned seat cushions.

It leaves you not only emotionally satisfied by triggering and soothing the pleasure centres of your brain and taste palette, it nourishes your spirit and body as well.

Emotional satisfaction, the triggering of pleasure centres – nourishment, be it intellectual, psychological, heartwarming or impassioned – are things that are integral to a positive, holistic experience with either a film, an album (or soundtrack), or another human being.

This LP was a shiny gem of a find for my inner magpie thanks to my intrepid, genius-level IQ daughter.

Featuring covers of Elliott Smith’s Needle in the Hay by Juliana Hatfield, The Who’s A Quick One While He’s Away by Saint Motel, These Days by Matt Pond and Ziggy Stardust by Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s – to name but a very few – is a compilation that leaves you awash in not only aural rip tides of musical emotion, but you cannot help but have the super 8mm camera in your mind start stuttering through the celluloid frames of each visual montage the song conjures from every moment of the many Anderson films it was lifted from.

Production quality is outstanding and the curated playlist spins out like the ultimate late-night DJ set from your favourite college radio station.

If emotional connections and visual pastiches dabbling in the subdued colour palettes of Anderson’s films is a listening session that sounds like an experience you could curl up to either alone, or with a fellow audiophile and cinephile, then I cannot recommend this compilation highly enough.

Just ordered the CD! I love Wes--his love, nostalgia, and faith in a world that never really was always warms my heart.

Personal favorite is Moonlight Kingdom--it describes both the beauty and absurdity of being a Boy Scout.

I did not know about this disc! Thank you so much!

If you get Sirius radio, Jason Schwartzman hosts a show called Coconut Radio that I quite enjoy.

Now, off I go to Amazon!

I can't stop playing back the WAV download from Bandcamp.

If your genius daughter has more recommendations like this I hope she will be a regular contributor here!

Enjoyable. I bought two copies.

For the actual Wes Anderson films, the Criterion Collection versions of the Blu-Rays have updated film to digital video transfers and re-mastered audio. I have the Criterion Collection of:

Moonrise Kingdom
The Royal Tenenbaums
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
