Download of the Week: The Heliocentrics

I had a dream that I lived in a world where I could listen to darn near any music of my choosing, watch darn near any movie I wanted, buy things from darn near anywhere in the world and look at darn near any art all without ever leaving my Aeron Chair.

I had a dream that I selected a new album to listen to from the multitudes from a band I had never heard and it unfolded into an album of my dreams.

Then I woke up to realize it wasn't a dream.

The Heliocentrics A World Of Masks is that album, released on Soundways Records in May of this year. Genre-defying wonderfully good badness, my friend John DeVore said it best:

It starts to get very Beatle-y, then, just as I’m expecting John and Paul to start bickering, Grace Slick shows up and punches them both in the mouth.

After listening to A World Of Masks one million times in a row, I went about listening to every available Heliocentrics title on Tidal and have found a new band to love. Shape-shifters they are and a "primarily instrumental group, who operate out of their vintage analogue studio in East London called the Quatermass Sound Lab, bring in a new singer on album number four—a young Slovakian singer called Barbora Patkova." Their shape-shifting comes in the form of the collaborator of choice for each record who have included Lloyd Miller, Mulatu Astatke, Orlando Julius, and Melvin Van Peebles.

At present, Barbora Patkova leads the pack and A World Of Masks continues to entrance and delight nearly beyond my wildest imaginings then Grace Slick shows up and punches me in the mouth.

The Heliocentrics A World Of Masks is available from Bandcamp.

I noticed it in Tidal's New Releases, look up the band's bio and gave it a spin. It immediately went on repeat for most of the weekend. The album listened to as a whole totally transported me back to the weirdness that was late 90s New Orleans in all the best ways.

It must sound absolutely amazing on the big Gibbons :)

Reading the first paragraph, I thought perhaps Michael is spending just a little too much time in that Aeron Chair... ;-)

Since I`m lazy, download of the week is easy. This one in particular. The Heliosentrics with Astatke was on rotation a couple of years ago. This one, even better. Thanks!

Thank God for psychedelia in a not-so-psychedelic-anymore world.
