Download of the Week: Flying Lotus

"It's like a modern Bitches Brew." is what I said to Stephen and John in an email about You're Dead! (Wrap Records) the new Flying Lotus album. But there's more, like touches of ethereal Alice Coltrane, Steven Ellison's (aka Flying Lotus) great-aunt, sax solos and Snoop Dogg. Herbie Hancock, Kendrick Lamar, Captain Murphy, Angel Deradoorian, Thundercat, and Niki Randa also join in for a lovely swirling mid-bending trip-o-delic delight.

Death! That's the over-reaching subject of this album yet it's near slap-stick joyful at times, never getting self absorbed or overly heavy. This is also jazz fusion, with eviscerating guitar jams, break beats, and far out sounds. A true melding of styles, sounds, and voices adding up to one mighty record that'll raise your spirits.

Sonic warning—this album rates a 4 on the dynamic range database so it is dynamically compressed but the music comes through. You can get yours in 16 or 24-bit/44.1kHz from Bleep and watch this amazing video of the single "Never Catch Me" featuring Kendrick Lamar...

Maybe I need some Colorado brownies...shades of Hendrix. I need to loosen my tie some I guess.

michael, you may have really gone too far recommending an album with a dr4?

How does the sound compare to a bitches brew with dr12?

No offense, but you are highly risking your credibility.

Just some friendly advice. When Alan taffel from TAS started to recommend music with low dr i simply stopped reading him, reviews included. Don't risk your readership. Imbelieve you have always done a great job.

... that your credibility remains intact and your readership will continue to grow regardless of the DR scores of recommended music. Keep 'em coming!
