Download of the Week: Fille Qui Mousse

Oh baby! I do love finding deliciously rare and delightful finds. Fille Qui Mousse (girl foam?) "was a leftist political collective led by journalist/musician Henri-Jean Enu in the very early '70s in Paris." according to AllMusic. In In 1971 the collective went into Futura Records studio and put down their one and only record in one day. Futura was having financial difficulties, some things never change, so the album originally titled Se Taire Pour Une Femme Trop Belle sat on the shelves until 1973 when a few, five according to Futura, test pressings were made.

the list

Some credit the infamous Nurse With Wound List, which was included in their first LP Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella (1979), for reviving interest in Fille Qui Mousse. In any event, Spalax Music released the first official CD reissue in 1998 (there was an unofficial CD release on Mellow Records in 1974). Fractal and Futura Records jumped back on board in 2001 with their own CD releases and there are even newer (limited) LP pressings out there (Discogs is your friend).

Trixie Stapelton 291 - Se Taire Pour Une Femme Trop Belle as it's know today, is available from the Mellow Records Bandcamp page!! That news gets two !! because this is a great record, according to my tastes. The obvious comparison made by...everyone... is to Faust but that won't really help you figure Fille Qui Mousse's music out. Listening, however, will.

Psychedelic rock, surrealist poetry with barking dogs, jazz, found sounds, drone, noise, etc etc (and a song!). Stick any one label on Trixie Stapelton 291 - Se Taire Pour Une Femme Trop Belle and you'll come up worlds short. I'd call it...simply wonderful.

The website has a great design, work flawlessly, and the sound samples sounded great. A great marketing tool for them to make shopping an easy thing to do. What a concept. Others need to use this for a model.

Not to spoil everyone's fun but it's not "girl foam". "mousse" in this context is the third-person present tense conjugation of "mousser" which in this case really means "to bubble". Therefore the title should probably be understood as "The Girl Who Bubbles".

Those interested in investigating the etymology further are advised to check this link: http://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/mousser

"Soap Bubbles: Their Colors and Forces Which Mold Them" by C.V. Boys comes to mind.

... according to Argoji http://russki-mat.net/find.php?l=FrFr&q=Mousse&c=lem it can also mean "to have a bowel movement". Or words to that effect.

... opens a vast range of possibilities: to satisfy one's needs, to be carried away with anger, to be successful, to speak endlessly of one's own good qualities...
