The Decade in Music: A Mixtrospective

Another decade is upon us with 2020 here and I’ve already heard it referred to as the “Second Roaring ’20s.” Whether or not it lives up to the previous century’s iteration, looking ahead, this ’20s promises to be an amazing ride for digital audio. The groundswell of music lovers who are choosing the Internet as their source for music is a driving force for new/rising wired and wireless technology in the hobby we know as audiophiledom.

Looking back, we see many important hardware and software developments in the last 10 years, in what was truly the decade of streaming digital audio. And while these interfaces and black or silver boxes continue to be our windows into this world, let us not forget that all this future-fi is in service to the music. After all, what’s the point of it if you can’t listen in high-resolution to the million albums we finally have unfettered access to. With that, I hand things over to the resident music advisor here at AudioStream, Scott Eastlick, who has been working diligently for several weeks to curate two ultimate mixes of the 2010s which span the bedroom to the dancefloor. – Rafe Arnott

Summing up a decade of music while you’re still in it can be a tricky proposition. Like looking at a large, intricate painting with your eyes just inches from the canvas.

While I found the endeavour of tallying previous decades almost within grasp, this decade made it difficult to arrive at anything particularly universal. Unlike previous decades where everyone pretty much watched the same TV shows and movies – and when everybody was down with Prince – this last decade was more about tailoring our experiences than it was about sharing them.

Dance music became increasingly cliquish and popular music has never seemed as far from an underground that itself is increasingly bifurcated by subsets of sonic taste. Aware that few of us had the same musical experience over the last 10 years, this selection attempts to create the most inclusive experience from the most worthy artists of the last decade. – Scott Eastlick

The title of this article is grandiose. There are so many other types of music in the last decade that the list ignores, such as classical, Broadway, jazz, world music, and many others. And not all of the THE music from the last decade pertains to the bedroom or the dance floor.

For Diff'rent Folks. Most people under 30 I know aren't jazz, classical or world music fans... (I am an UNABASHED one), never mind Broadway... things change generationally. There's a place for everyone's taste.
