This was another show that put the human back into high-fidelity for me. How? For starters it was the more approachable size of the venue and the fact that I connected with so many old friends and met so many new ones. This hobby is like that – when you make a friend they stick.

I’ve discovered over the years at hi-fi shows that there’s an inviolate gravitional pull into a room when you see the hosts are using gear you own.

Who doesn’t like big VU-type meters – regardless if they’re blue, green or white in this case.

Some demonstrations at hi-fi shows are politely interesting, some are confusing and some are eye (ear) opening. It all depends on your particular bent to sound and whether you’re open to having an open mind – not something many audiophiles I’ve encountered seem particularly interested in.

Sometimes you walk into a room and you just know you’re going to be impressed by the sound of the high-fidelity equipment curated for listening.

This is a hobby where what one hears when it comes to music reproduction is absolutely relative to one’s own tastes not in only in music, but how that music is played back – what it is a particular system is able to pass along from a recording and whether that system is doing it in a manner which is acceptable to us, thrills us or turns us off completely.

“Strange things are afoot at the Cirlce-K.” – Ted, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. A relatable quote if you’ve ever been to a hi-fi trade show and tried to make sense of hundreds of rooms full of stereo equipment.

Azalea is one of my favorite slow jazz/swing numbers ever – Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington flow like honey on a hot summer day if you’re listening to it on the right system.

Fatigue is something you have to be mindful of at a show, like, well, T.H.E. Show. There’s a lot of listening rooms on multiple floors and as a reviewer you’re constantly hustling, so you need to be mindful to pace yourself, otherwise you’ll suffer the consequences of fatigue.

“Do you have anything with female vocals?” I kept my head straight ahead, but slid my eyes sideways to take in the young man who had just sat down to my right while I was listening in the Common Wave room at T.H.E. Show on Saturday afternoon.

Deep Impact. Remember that movie? It came out in 1998 and I still get goosebumps thinking about Morgan Freeman (playing US President Tom Beck) delivering that line “Our missiles have failed. The comets are still headed for Earth, and there's nothing we can do to stop them.”

Every time I head to Los Angeles I can’t help but think of the opening sequence to seminal science-fiction film Blade Runner.
