My favorite post from CES 2017 is the video compilation CES 2017: A Video Snapshot over on Stereophile put together by Jana Dagdagan. It's my favorite because it gives a good sense of the people and personalities within our industry. Too often these details go unnoticed, or worse still, purposefully ignored which can have a dehumanizing affect. While it should go without saying, the people in the hi-fi business are people, too.

The biggest and most meaningful buzz from CES 2017 was . . . Prince. As I explained, Jonathan Derda was playing "Avalanche" from the Club-members-only album One Nite Alone... and I was told I must hear "Avalanche" in the MoFi room by Stephen Mejias. After hearing it, I passed on the word.

yea: those bastards at AARP had a room amid the hi-fi rooms at CES 2017 to remind us we're all going to die a humiliating death

It all depends on how you look at it.

In addition to the MoFi room, here are my other highlights.

"Did you hear that Prince track in the MoFi room?" asked my good friend Stephen Mejias.

"No."

"I didn't know it was Prince."

An MQA encoded file can be played back in four ways; with no decoding, software decoding, hardware decoding, and a combined software/hardware decode.

Typically Venetian- and/or Mirage-bound exhibitors including dCS, Bluesound, and ELAC were also on active display at the Hi-Res Audio Pavilion in the LVCC, the circus circus carnivalesque commodity trading floor pumping pounding shoving flashing booth-babe sporting sports center of CES.

Rob Watts illustrating an essential ingredient in any presentation

Chord Electronics Ltd introduced three new products at CES 2017; the new and improved Hugo2 (£1,800), Blu MkII upscaling CD transport (£7,995), and Poly (£499). I'll let Chord's slide show tell you most of story and just add that I had to leave before the Poly presentation. Poly attaches to the Chord Mojo adding a micro SD card reader, Bluetooth, and WiFi so that the Mojo becomes a nifty little high-resolution wireless network music player, streamer and SD card playback device.

while HDtracks did not speak at the DEG event, their message, especially "...and streaming enthusiasts", sure did

Thursday, January 5 was the first day of the show and also the date of the Digital Entertainment Group's Hi-Res Audio Update. For the most part I felt a strong sense of déjà vu (not the CSN&Y song but that would kinda make sense too) as the language used to describe the hi-res listening experience had more goosebumps and raised hairs on the backs of necks than a tower of giraffes in a blizzard.

In a few short weeks, or long weeks depending on to what extent you've been infected with the audiophile bug, AudioQuest DragonFly Red & Black owners can download and install the free AQ app which facilitates a firmware upgrade turning your 'Fly into an MQA-enabled DAC.

Tidal HiFi account owners can upgrade their account (for free) with the tick of that new "HiFi / Master" option in Tidal's settings menu and stream from "more than 30,000" MQA encoded tracks. Right now.
