Ballaké Sissoko & Vicent Segal: Chamber Music

Chamber Music isn't exactly what you're thinking. Instead think traditional kora and cello. Yea, sounds like it might be beautiful, right? It is.

Malian kora player Ballaké Sissoko plays on one of my regular rotating rips the sonically stunning CD Kulanjan with Taj Mahal that pairs a number of Malian musicians with Taj's baritone and dobro. Here on Chamber Music Vincent Segal's cello weaves in and out of traditional cello-sounds and his playing at times mimics the plucked string instrument of Sissoko then bows itself into focus. The pair are joined by guest appearances that include ngoni, karignan and balafon and the shear beauty of these varied sounds are intoxicating. This is timeless worldly music that I cannot recommend highy enough.

You can sample and download the CD-quality FLAC version of Chamber Music from Quboz.

You can also listen to the duo perform live on NPR.

And, you can see & hear the duo perform on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert.

The first time I heard the music of this duo, at Jonathan Halpern's FB page I believe, it immediately moved me. Serentiy now! Beautiful.

I'd be very curious to hear your take on them, especially the Taj Mahal
